He received very little attention during his childhood. He repeated both first and second grades, and attended eleven different schools during his first nine years as a student. He was placed in foster care at age seven, and alternated between living in various foster homes and periods of homelessness.

Michael Oher played football during his freshman year at a public high school in Mempis & applied for admission at Briarcrest Christian School at the instigation of acquaintance Tony Henderson, an auto mechanic, with whom he was living temporarily. Henderson was enrolling his son at the school in order to fulfill the dying wish of the boy’s grandmother and thought Oher might enroll as well. The school football coach submitted application form to head master who agreed to accep Michael Oher if Oher could complete the home study program first.
The turning point of his life started when he was taken in by Sean and Leigh Anne Tuohy when he was 16 & Tuohys became Oher’s legal guardians when he became 17. When he was playing for Sean & Leigh Anne Tuohy, he started to excel in football. Oher was the starting left tackle on the varsity football team. Michael Oher got a great success in 2004 when he received first team All-America honors from USA Today and was given the opportunity to play in the U.S. Army All-America Bowl.He also accepted a scholarship offer from the University of Mississippi after receiving offers from Tennessee, LSU, Alabama and NC State, among others. Michael Oher played 11 games for University of Mississipp, starting 10 of them at the right guard position.
